Lawrence graduated from Silver Bluff High School. He played tight end, offensive tackle, and defensive tackle as a senior, totaling 97 tackles and three sacks. He was named to the North-South All-Star team. Lawrence enrolled at Butler Community College in 2010 and redshirted. As a redshirt freshman in 2011, he led the team with 69 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks, while also earning All-Jayhawk Conference and NJCAA All-America honors.
Before the 2012 season, he changed schools and attended Boise State. He began each of the 11 games as a sophomore and finished first on the team with 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
