Six games into his redshirt freshman season, he was named the outside linebacker starting. He finished the year with 43 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He had 29 stops, 10 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and was selected a second-team All-American by the Associated Press as a redshirt sophomore. After completing his redshirt junior season with 39 total stops, 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and one forced fumble, Bonitto was once again named to the second team of the Big 12.
