Raynor started playing drums at a young age, forming a band with friend Ryan Kennedy at the age of 11 to compete in a school competition – “a kind of show and tell’ thing,” Raynor later recalled. The duo was inspired by Metallica at first, but found their material far too technical; instead, they performed “Twist of Cain” by Danzig and “London Dungeon” by the Misfits. Raynor’s first official performance was a cover of Gwar’s “Vlad the Impaler.”

Paul Scott, a founding member of The Necropheliacs, introduced Raynor to DeLonge at a party shortly before he moved out of state.
