Raynor started playing drums at a young age, forming a band with friend Ryan Kennedy at the age of 11 to compete in a school competition – “a kind of show and tell’ thing,” Raynor later recalled. The duo was inspired by Metallica at first, but found their material far too technical; instead, they performed “Twist of Cain” by Danzig and “London Dungeon” by the Misfits. Raynor’s first official performance was a cover of Gwar’s “Vlad the Impaler.”

Raynor graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS). Raynor took part in Battle of the Bands competitions at RBHS, where his band, The Necropheliacs, performed a cover of Metallica’s “Creeping Death.” During the competition, new transfer student Tom DeLonge, who had been expelled from Poway High School for being drunk at a basketball game, performed an original song titled “Who’s Gonna Shave Your Back Tonight?” to a packed auditorium. Paul Scott, a founding member of The Necropheliacs, introduced Raynor to DeLonge at a party shortly before he moved out of state.
