Michael Learned was born on April 9, 1939, to Elizabeth Duane “Betti” and Bruce Learned in Washington, D.C. Her father was a diplomat and her maternal grandfather was an attaché for the United States Embassy in Rome.
At the age of 11, she moved to Austria. There, her father worked for the U.S. State Department. During this time, she attended the Arts Educational School, Tring. The school is now known as the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Tring, Hertfordshire, England.
It was during her time at the school that she decided to pursue a career in acting.
