Roger Federer is retiring from tennis. The Swiss maestro has announced his retirement, and the end is fast approaching.
The 41-year-old has battled injury issues in recent years and will retire as a 20-time Grand Slam champion with eight Wimbledon titles – more than any other male player at SW19.
Federer’s most recent Grand Slam triumph came at the 2018 Australian Open.
Despite reaching the Wimbledon final against all odds in 2019, he has only competed in two of the last 11 majors since COVID was discovered.
Federer has confirmed that he will compete in this year’s Laver Cup, which will be held between Friday, September 23rd, and Sunday, September 25th, 2022.
The tournament, now in its fifth year, is modeled after the Ryder Cup in tennis, with Team Europe facing Team World in singles and doubles matches that translate into points over a three-day period.
Federer will form an unprecedented elite team with Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
Every player will compete in one singles match and one or two doubles matches.
It remains to be seen if Federer will be able to play more than one match in the tournament.
