Jesse was born to Johnny and Jenny Clegg. His father Johnny was a South African musician and singer-songwriter. He is also known for his academic work in dancing and anthropology.
Some of his work in musicology focused on the music of indigenous South African peoples. Johnny was also an anti-apartheid activist. His band Juluka was the first to feature a white man and a black man during the country’s apartheid era.
The duo performed at many events before eventually adding a number of musicians and instrumentalists. He passed away in July 2019 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
