Her parents divorced when she was a baby, after the divorce, her biological father moved to Baja California.
Her mother, who was a shipping clerk at an electronics company remarried Stephen Laine in 1990. He was a middle manager at the same electronics company that she worked in.
Despite not being adopted by her step-father, she changed her last name to his and went by Vanessa Marie Laine in 2000.
However, after 13 years of marriage, her mother divorced Laine in 2003 amid cheating allegations, which he denied. When Vanessa filed for divorce from Kobe over infidelity allegations, Laine then suggested she was a money-grabber “like her mum”.
