Len Dawson was born the ninth of 11 children of James and Annie Dawson.

During his childhood, he attended Alliance High School in Alliance. There, he was MVP of the football team and was named outstanding Ohio back of the year by the International News Service.

He played three different sports and set school records in football and in basketball. He was also the first athlete in 13 years to be named first-team all-state in both sports during the same year.

After high school, he had the choice between Ohio State University and Purdue University. He decided to settle with Purdue University due to his relationship with assistant coach Hank Stram.
