Lydia de Vega health condition: What disease did Lydia de Vega have?

Sports icon Lydia de Vega died after a four-year cancer battle.

De Vega was a councilor in her hometown of Meycauayan, Bulacan province.

She was designated as the Alliance of Coaches and Athletes of the Philippines’ liaison person with the Philippine Sports Commission in early 2005.

De Vega moved to Singapore in December 2005 after obtaining three employment offers from Singaporean private schools to manage athletics.

In Singapore, she is presently mentoring young athletes. Her most recent public appearance was as one of the flag bearers during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games opening ceremony in the Philippines.

De Vega was married to Paul Mercado, a former Meralco engineer, and entrepreneur with whom she had three daughters, one of them is Stephanie (Paneng), a former collegiate volleyball player for the DLSU Lady Spikers.

Her four-year-old son, John Michael, was killed in an automobile accident in February 2001.

De Vega was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2018.

Stephanie disclosed in July 2022 that her mother had undergone brain surgery but was “in critical condition.”
