Veteran C.I.A. agent Gary C. Schroen passed away on August 1 at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, one day after an American missile killed Ayman al-Zawahri, the last of those men, just weeks after leading the first team of agents into Afghanistan to prepare for an invasion and start the search for Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants.
He was 80.
His wife, Anne McFadden, claimed that complications from a fall were to blame.
Gary Schroen cause of death
Over the course of his more than 30 years with the C.I.A., Mr. Schroen oversaw espionage and agent activities throughout the Middle East.
When the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked by terrorists acting on bin Laden’s orders, he had already completed 11 days of the necessary three-month retirement transition program for the agency.
He stewed for the next few days, angry that the abilities and information he had spent years developing would be useless just when they were needed.

He is married to Anne McFadden. There is not any data about his children.
