Jennette McCurdy, a former Nickelodeon star, has spoken up about the physical and mental abuse she endured from her mother both before and after her rise to stardom as a child actor.

McCurdy spoke about her mother’s alleged mistreatment of her throughout her childhood.

The iCarly actress, who announced her retirement from acting in 2017, told People about her one-woman show, I’m Glad My Mom Died, which addresses the “severe” physical and mental abuse she underwent at the hands of her mother, Debbie McCurdy, who died of cancer in 2013.

McCurdy went on to say that her mother pushed her to become a celebrity from an early age.

“My mother had always wanted to be a renowned actress, and she got obsessed with making me a celebrity,” she explained. Despite being “cripplingly bashful,” McCurdy went on auditions and began accumulating her résumé of parts. “I felt like it was my obligation to preserve the peace,” she continued. “I also wanted to make my mother happy.”
