Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri was an Egyptian-born physician and theologian who was the leader of the terrorist group al-Qaeda from June 2011 until his death in July 2022.
He succeeded Osama bin Laden following his death and was earlier a senior member of Islamist organizations which led attacks in Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe. In 2012, he called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners in Muslim countries.

Ayman’s father was Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri and his mother was Umayma Azzam. Ayman al-Zawahiri was born in 1951 in the neighborhood of Giza, in the then Kingdom of Egypt. Ayman Al-Zawahiri said that he has a deep affection for his mother. Her brother, Mahfouz Azzam, became a role model for him as a teenager.
