Robert Gamez, a three-time PGA Tour champion and former Rookie of the Year, was detained in Florida over the weekend on suspicion of misdemeanor violence, according to a report.
Gamez, 54, was detained early on Sunday morning following an alleged incident at a home in Orlando’s Bay Hill neighborhood, according to a story from USA Today.
According to the story, which cited court documents, the 1990 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year was accused of battery, which is defined by Florida law as “actually an intentionally touches or strikes another person against the other.”
He was reportedly released, but it was not immediately clear what led to his arrest.
Gamez made his professional debut on the Tour in 1989, where he enjoyed the most early-career success.
The following year, when he famously beat Greg Norman at the Nestle Invitational at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando by one stroke on the 72nd hole, he rose to his greatest world ranking (No. 45).
