Uwe Seeler was recognized as one of the world’s top attackers throughout his playing career with Hamburg and West Germany, which lasted from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, and he received several awards.
On three occasions Seeler was named West Germany’s Footballer of the Year in 1960, 1964, and 1970, the same year he received the Federal Cross of Merit. Despite never winning a trophy with West Germany, he was just the second man to be designated honorary captain of the national team in 1972. In 1960, he helped Hamburg win the German football title for the third time.
