Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is an American politician who since 2019, has been serving as the U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district.

Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 4, 1982 and spent her early years in Baidoa, Somalia.
She was born the youngest child of Nur Omar Mohamed and Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein. Her father was an ethnic Somali from the Majeerteen clan of Northeastern Somalia. He was also a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre who also worked as a teacher trainer.
Her mother, a Benadiri died when she was two. She was raised by her father and grandfather Abukar, who was the director of Somalia’s National Marine Transport.
Her family fled Somalia to escape the Somali Civil War and secured asylum in the United States. In 1995, they arrived in New York.
