Omar is the first Somali American, first African-born naturalized citizen, and first woman of color to represent Minnesota in the US Congress. Along with Rashida Tlaib, she is one of the first two Muslim women to hold a congressional position.

Nur Omar Mohamed was a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre and also worked as a teacher trainer. He and his wife, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein gave raised eight children together.

Both of her parents were Somali. Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, is from the Majeerteen clan of Northeastern Somalia, and her mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, is a Benadiri, a community of partial Yemeni descent.
