James Bopp

James Bopp Jr. born February 8, 1948, is a conservative American lawyer and former Indiana deputy attorney general.

He is best known for his work on election laws, model anti-abortion legislation, and campaign finance.

Bopp stated in 2022 that the model legislation he created for the National Right to Life Committee would have prohibited abortion for a 10-year-old rape victim.

From 2005 to 2012, Bopp was the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) vice chairman.

In 2012, he was defeated for re-election because he backed Richard Mourdock over Richard Lugar for the United States Senate.

Bopp has served as Indiana’s representative on the Republican Party’s platform committee, where he has advocated for a socially conservative platform.

Some delegates attempted to replace the platform with a simplified two-page “statement of principles” that omitted any mention of contentious issues like same-sex marriage.

Bopp argued in ProtectMarriage.com v. Bowen that disclosure laws should be used to protect the identities of people who supported California’s Proposition 8.
