Hunt was born on November 1st, 1966, at Lambeth Hospital in Kennington, and grew up in Shere, Surrey.
He is the oldest child of Admiral Sir Nicholas Hunt, then a Commander in the Royal Navy, and his wife Meriel Hunt, Major Henry Cooke’s daughter, who was working for the Director of Naval Plans at the newly established Ministry of Defence.
Hunt studied philosophy, politics, and economics, earning a first-class honors Bachelor of Arts degree at Magdalen College in Oxford. He participated actively in the Oxford University Conservative Association and in 1987 he was chosen to hold the position of president.

At the old age of 84, Lady Meriel, the mother of Jeremy Hunt, passed away in her home in January of 2022 after a battle with cancer. She was survived by Jeremy, Sarah, Charles, and Susanna, as well as nine grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at St. James Church in Shere just a couple of weeks later.
