Hunt was born on November 1st, 1966, at Lambeth Hospital in Kennington, and grew up in Shere, Surrey. He is the oldest child of Admiral Sir Nicholas Hunt, then a Commander in the Royal Navy, and his wife Meriel Hunt, Major Henry Cooke’s daughter, who was working for the Director of Naval Plans at the newly established Ministry of Defence.
He studied philosophy, politics, and economics, earning a first-class honors Bachelor of Arts degree At Magdalen College in Oxford.

Sarah Hunt died after a battle with cancer. In June 2022, Hunt revealed that every member of his family had suffered from cancer at some point, and he himself had recovered from a minor one.
His mother Lady Meriel also died after a long battle with cancer in January of 2022 at the old age of 84 years. The family has been a major donor to the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre
