Lewis Hamilton has dismissed Formula One’s We Race As One campaign, which was established to promote diversity and inclusion and combat discrimination, as “simply words.”
This follows many complaints from spectators during last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix of racism, homophobia, and misogyny.
F1 issued a statement on Sunday morning, saying, ‘This kind of behavior is abhorrent and will not be accepted.’
‘We take these matters very seriously, have raised them with the promoter and event security, and will be speaking to those who reported the incidents.’
However, Hamilton, who described himself as “disgusted and dismayed” by the reports, believes it is long past time for the sport to take meaningful action on these issues.
‘We definitely need to utilise our platforms, but we really have to step up and actually really start actioning some of the things we are saying,’ the Mercedes driver said in the post-race press conference after he finished third at the Red Bull Ring.’
