The mother of a “promising” boxer who drowned in a quarry has described him as “one in a million.”
Jamie Lewin, 16, was involved in an accident on Saturday night in Dawber Delph, near Wigan.
Rescue workers rushed to the site and pulled his body from the river. The quarry pronounced him dead.
Jamie’s mother, Steph Lewin, paid homage to her son, saying, ‘Jamie was a talented boxer who enjoyed life and had so much to look forward to.’
‘He was so loved by everyone. He touched so many peoples’ lives in such a short time, he really did spread himself far. He really was one in a million.
‘I’m so happy I was his mum. He was only 16 and so full of life and so happy.’
Detectives are not investigating his death and are creating a case for the coroner.
As temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius, the emergency services are reminding people about the dangers of swimming in open water.
It follows the death of another 16-year-old kid in a canal in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
