Bernard Toone was a basketball player from Yonkers, New York.

Toone attended Marquette University, where he was a sophomore reserve for the Warriors’ 1977 National Championship team in Hall of Fame coach Al McGuire’s last season.

He was said to have had cancer.

In his final two years at MU, Toone’s output rose under head coach Hank Raymonds. As a senior in 1978-79, Toone took over as the team’s standout, averaging 18.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

As a senior, Toone averaged 18.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, earning him a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ fourth team (NABC).

Toone was picked in the second round of the 1979 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers when his NCAA eligibility expired. Toone’s NBA career lasted only one season, in 1979-80, when he averaged 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as a reserve for the 76ers.

He will be missed.
