Jordan Byrd, the current assistant golf coach at Clemson, lost his father, the elder Byrd, according to an online obituary from Dunbar Funerals and Cremations.
Three-time PGA TOUR champion Jonathan Byrd skipped the Memorial Tournament.
Additionally, he withdrew from the John Deere Classic that week in Silvis, Illinois.
James Byrd earned letters at the University of North Carolina in both football and baseball.
His passion, according to his family, was playing golf and competing against his boys.
In November 2007, James Byrd collapsed at a Clemson football game and was later given a brain cancer diagnosis. He had surgery shortly after that.
A private burial will take place after the memorial ceremonies on Friday at Columbia’s First Presbyterian Church.
James was a wonderful father who gave Jonathan all the support he needed.
