In January 2007, Ebden, one of his tennis students, took part in the Australian Open qualifying round.
He overcame British opponent Richard Bloomfield in the opening round of qualifying. 6-3, 5-7, 8-6. Ilija Bozoljac of Serbia defeated him 2-6, 4-6 in the next round.
At the USA F21 competition in August 2007, Ebden won his first Futures competition.
In the first round of the championship, he overcame John Millman, another Australian wildcard, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Despite being ranked 156 places lower in the ATP rankings, he defeated world number 40 and eighth seed Denis Istomin in his second-round encounter 6-4, 6-4.
In his early years, Ebden focused mostly on trying to raise his ranking on the futures tour.
