Hammond was born in Tweedside, Jamaica, and immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1959, where she spent the remainder of her life. Hammond had a long and illustrious theater career.
She died at the age of 91.

Her agent reported that the Jamaican-British actress died quietly in the early hours of Monday morning.
She was granted an OBE for her services to theater in 2005, after a career spanning seven decades and recognition for both her work on stage and cinema.
She played the Jackson family matriarch from 1994 to 1997, returning briefly in October 2010 to attend the burial of her on-screen great-grandson Billie Jackson.
“We are profoundly saddened to learn that Mona Hammond has died away,” EastEnders said in a statement.
“In Blossom Jackson, Mona developed a no-nonsense grandma who was liked by the audience and everyone who worked with her.” Our hearts go out to Mona’s family and friends.”
