Leonid Shvartsman was born in Minsk on August 30, 1920, and after graduating from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1941, he was enlisted in the military.

He has been employed at the Soyuzmultfilm film company since 1948. In 1951, he graduated from VGIK with a diploma in cartoon art direction, and he later worked with Alexander Vinokurov as a production designer. Shvartsman started working independently in 1963, and as a director in 1975.

The cartoons The Scarlet Flower, The Kitten Named Woof, 38 Parrots, The Golden Antelope, Beware the Monkeys!, and many other paintings by Leonid Shvartsman are among his creations.

Shvartsman contributed to the design of Cheburashka’s visual representation in Roman Kachanov’s cartoon Crocodile Gena in 1969.
