Johnson entered politics in 2010 with a run for the United States Senate, despite having no prior experience in elected office. At a Tea Party rally that year, he found a receptive crowd and a state Republican Party machine that was supportive of his campaign, speaking out against federal overreach and the government’s economic stimulus initiatives. With over 52 percent of the vote, he was elected to the Senate.
Johnson voted in ways that indicated his conservative views after gaining office in 2011. He presented legislation to strengthen the Department of Homeland Security’s initiatives and to ensure a full accounting of the United States’ payments to the UN. He has also sponsored numerous proposals aimed at undermining the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA; 2010).
