She attended Gunn High School in the year 1966 in Palo Alto, and while in high school, she was a member of the Junior State of America, a student-run political debate, activism, and student governance organization. She earned her B.A. degree at Stanford University in the year 1970 and a Juris Doctor degree at Santa Clara University School of Law in the year 1975
She got married to her husband name John Marshall Collins in the year 1978 and together they had two children namely Sheila Collins and John Collins.
