A 20-year-old British woman lost her life following weight-loss surgery in Turkey. According to Metro, South London resident Morgan Maria Ribeiro and her partner Jamie Brewster traveled to Turkey earlier this month for gastric sleeve surgery.

Ms. Ribeiro had done extensive research, according to Mr. Brewster, before deciding to have the treatment, which he said cost her 2500 pounds. She was allowed to leave the hospital on January 5 after her operation, and three days later she was able to go home.

However, she got severely ill on the way back to Gatwick Airport, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing in Serbia.

After being taken to the hospital, she was diagnosed with septic shock by the medical staff, who explained that the illness was brought on by an incision made during the treatment in her small intestine. On January 9, she had a heart attack and was put into an induced coma.  Four days later, on January 13, the 20-year-old passed away in Belgrade.

Before undergoing the gastric sleeve operation, Ms. Ribeiro posted a final TikTok video with the description, “My last post before weight loss surgery-see you on the other side.” Erin Gibson, the distraught mother of Ms. Ribeiro, said to The Independent that she “never wants this to happen to another daughter.”

She had already boarded the plane when I realized it was too late. I had heard awful things about Turkey, which was why I experienced that sinking feeling. I would never want another girl to experience this. She remarked, “I don’t want her life to be in vain.” The bereaved mother revealed that her daughter had previously battled with her weight and had been teased by bullies since a young age.

She had frequent bullying as a child, struggled with her weight, and struggled with being a bigger girl. She said, “I told her she was a beautiful girl, beautiful on the inside and out.”

To pay for her daughter’s funeral and return to the UK, Ms. Gibson is presently collecting £10,000. An official from the administration said, “We are working with the local authorities to provide support to the family of a British woman who died in Belgrade.

We urge anyone thinking about getting medical work done overseas to read over our travel advisory as well as pertinent directives from the NHS and other organizations.”

For people who are clinically obese, gastric sleeve surgery is offered as a weight loss therapy. A portion of the stomach is removed during the treatment to create a sleeve and reduce the stomach’s size, which reduces appetite.
