A Canadian-American actor, comedian, playwright, and graphic designer, Philip Edward Hartman (né Hartmann; born September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998) passed away in 1998.

When Hartman was ten years old, his family relocated from Brantford, Ontario, Canada, where he was born, to New York City, New York.

After earning a degree in graphic arts from California State University, Northridge, he created album covers for bands like America and Poco. He joined The Groundlings 1975, a comedic troupe, where he assisted Paul Reubens in creating the role of Pee-wee Herman. In addition to serving as Captain Carl on Reubens’ Pee-Playhouse, wee’s Hartman co-wrote the movie Pee-Big wee’s Adventure.
