The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani has been hit with tragedy following the death of a student during a robbery incident. The unfortunate event took place as a group of students were returning from a field trip near Boffourkrom in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region.
The deceased student has been identified as Abdul Aziz Issah, also known as Zamani, a Level 400 Renewable Energy Engineering student at the university. According to a statement released by the Deputy Registrar of the University Relations Office, Alfred Appiah, the incident occurred on Tuesday, 16th April, 2024, around 7 p.m. The statement indicated that a group of armed robbers attacked the students as they were returning from a field trip to the Bui Power Authority.
Tragically, one student lost his life as a result of the robbery, and the university management expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased.
The remaining students who were involved in the incident have received medical attention, been discharged, and are currently undergoing counseling to help them cope with the traumatic event.
In response to the incident, the Sunyani Police command has arrested one suspect in connection with the robbery. The university is working closely with the authorities to ensure that justice is served in this case.
This tragic event has deeply affected the university community and serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased security measures to protect students and prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
