PURC orders ECG to submit ‘dumsor’ timetable by April 2

In reaction to recent disruptions in the power supply, the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) has mandated, among other things, that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) submit a complete load management schedule.

The order dated March 18, 2024 states that ECG must provide PURC with the timeline and further information about its operational operations, including tariff revenue allocation and audit data, by April 2, 2024.

There have been requests for ECG to provide a load management schedule in order to assist customers in making the necessary adjustments during the frequent power outages that have been occurring around the nation.

The corporation hasn’t released a timeline, though, and refutes assertions that the nation has returned to the days of unstable electricity supply, or “dumsor.”

According to ECG, the current issues with the power supply are caused, among other things, by about 630 overloaded transformers, which cause outages during peak hours since the afflicted transformers are larger than they can handle.

As a result, PURC has ordered ECG to supply comprehensive data, which includes GPS coordinates, installation schedules for new transformers, ratings and current loadings of overloading distribution transformers, and installation plans.

Furthermore, ECG must provide a load management schedule that corresponds with installation schedules and proof that it has informed customers of this information.
