Tolon District farmers trained as technology focal persons

Smallholder farmers in the Northern Region’s Tolon District have been invited to attend a training session aimed at enhancing their ability to function as regional hubs for the transmission of agricultural innovation and technology.

The recipients were instructed in modern agronomic techniques, organic farming, and climate-smart agriculture.

The beneficiaries of this initiative, which is being run by the Ghana Agricultural Innovation Network (GAIN) with assistance from the Danida Alumni Network in Ghana, are anticipated to share the knowledge they have gained with their colleagues in order to increase yields.

Speaking to the farmers at the training in Tolon, Eugene Dela Setsoafia, a researcher at the Danida Alumni Network, stated that the benefiting farmers would support the District Agriculture Department’s efforts to connect with a large number of farmers in the region.

He pointed out that poor planning had been a significant problem impeding the work of extension officers, but that thanks to the program, the lead farmers will find it easier to support their colleagues because they shared the same communities.

He asked the recipients to impart the knowledge they had learned to other farmers so that they might increase food security and agricultural production.

Basit Abdul Zakari, the director of agriculture for the Tolon District, praised the organization and its partner for providing the farmers with training.

“Basically, it means that some farmers may not readily get access to agriculture extension officers; that is why this intervention is very important,” he said, pointing out that the district’s farmer-to-agriculture extension officer ratio was approximately 1:3,000, higher than the global ratio of roughly 1:500.

Speaking with the Daily Graphic, a few of the recipients expressed gratitude to the organizers for the kindness and promised to share what they had learned with their colleagues.
