FIFA refutes reports of blue card introduction in elite football

FIFA, the authority that oversees international football, has refuted recent reports that suggested the use of blue cards in championship matches for the 2018 season, despite rumors of an impending trial that was supposed to be revealed this week.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) was anticipated to announce plans to introduce blue cards into the game, maybe starting next season, according to The Telegraph.

It was proposed, meanwhile, that these cards might be used in competitions that aren’t as competitive as others, such as the FA Cup and League Cup, if the Football Association (FA) decides to include them in the trial.

However, FIFA has denied claims that high-level competitions will not use blue cards. FIFA elaborated in a statement issued on Thursday, saying: “FIFA wishes to clarify that rumors of the so-called ‘blue card’ at elite levels of football are unverified and premature.

FIFA plans to highlight this stance when the topic is brought up at the IFAB AGM on March 1. Any experiments of this kind, if they are carried out, ought to be restricted to testing responsibly at lower levels.”

Referees would be given the authority to issue blue cards for disobedience and fouls intended to stymie aggressive plays, which would result in a player’s 10-minute temporary removal from the field.

Although blue cards have been implemented in several grassroots football leagues previously, their possible introduction to professional football signals a more widespread application of the “sin-bin” rule.

At their upcoming annual general meeting in March, FIFA is scheduled to discuss whether to begin a blue card trial.
