According to Moscow-backed sources, a Sunday attack on a busy market in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, which is under Russian occupation, resulted in at least 25 fatalities and 20 injuries.

Moscow and Kyiv have both charged that within the last two months, strikes on civilian areas have sharply increased.

Russian official television released footage showing shattered stores, broken glass, and what looked to be bodies laying on the ground nearby.

As of as now, 25 deaths have been officially confirmed. The head of the Russian-run government in the area, Denis Pushilin, stated that at least twenty more individuals had been hurt.

He referred to the incident as “horrific” and placed the blame on Ukraine for hitting a populated location.

Ukraine refrained from commenting right away, and AFP was unable to confirm the attack’s specifics right enough.

Less than 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the eastern front, according to officials, the strike occurred in a city suburb in the southwest.

This death toll is among the highest in Donetsk since full-scale hostilities against Ukraine were initiated by Moscow in February 2022. Moscow has claimed that the bombardment of Donetsk, which it has been occupying since 2014 through proxy forces, is indiscriminate.

The incident on Sunday was referred to by Moscow as a “barbaric terrorist attack” that demonstrated the necessity of its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

According to the foreign ministry, “terrorism and security threats should not be carried out from Ukrainian territory.”
