Renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg was recently detained during a Fossil Free London protest, joining fellow activists outside the InterContinental Hotel on Park Lane, where oil industry executives were convening.
The protest aimed to disrupt access to the hotel by blocking the entrance. Greta Thunberg’s arrest was confirmed by Fossil Free London on social media.
The Metropolitan Police had imposed conditions on the activists under Section 14 of the Public Order Act to avoid significant disruption to the local community and hotel guests.
They asked protesters to move from the road onto the pavement, but when several refused, arrests were made, including those for obstruction of the highway, Section 14 breaches, and one for criminal damage.
The event also saw Greenpeace activists abseiling down from the hotel’s roof with a banner advocating for big oil to pay its dues.
Thunberg asserted that direct action is necessary to address climate change and the undue influence of fossil fuel lobbyists on politicians.
