Her father, William John Garner, worked as a chemical engineer for Union Carbide; her mother, Patricia Ann English, was a homemaker and eventually an English teacher at a local college. She worked in summer stock theatre during her undergraduate years. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater performing in 1994.
