Working on a world premiere play called Macbeth at the Gates with Roy Marsden and his friend David Lumsden was one of his favorite experiences, as was working on A Love Song for Bobby Long with John Travolta, Scarlette Johannson, and Shani Gable (the movie that launched his journey into the film).
Rhodes grew up in Devon and graduated from the University of Glamorgan (now the University of South Wales) in Humanities in 1994, returning in 1997 to complete an MA in Creative Writing. Rhodes was named to Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists list in 2003, much to his chagrin and frustration, due in part to Granta’s selection criteria (“It’s one thing to judge a Writer by stuff they’ve written, but to judge them on stuff they’re going to write is lunacy”). but also because some of the others on the list did not respond to his request to sign a joint statement protesting the Iraq war.
