William Henry Gates III was born in Seattle, Washington on October 28, 1955. As a child, Gates was bullied. When his mother asked what he was doing, he preferred to stay in his room and shout “I’m thinking.” He enrolled in the private Lakeside prep school at 13 and wrote his first software program. During his first year at Lakeside, he was in eighth grade, and the school’s Mother’s Club used the proceeds from a fundraiser to purchase a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and time on a GE computer for the students. Gates became interested in BASIC programming for the GE computer.

On this computer, he wrote his first program, a tic-tac-toe game. The game was played on the computer. After being caught exploiting bugs in the operating system to gain free time on the machine, Gates and his friends Paul Allen, Ric Weiland, and Kent Evans were barred from using the school’s computer. To make money, the four students formed the Lakeside Programmers Club.

Gates and Paul Allen saw the release of the MITS Altair 8800, based on the Intel 8080 CPU, as the opportunity they needed to start their own computer software company. Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the creators of the new microcomputer, collaborated with Gates and Allen, using their Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer and then the BASIC interpreter. On November 26, 1976, the trade name Microsoft was registered. During Microsoft’s first five years, Gates reviewed every line of code the company shipped, frequently rewriting code as needed. Microsoft released the first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985.
