On Monday, Susan Sadlowski Garza confirmed reports that she would step down from her position on the Chicago City Council at the end of her tenure.

For the better part of a decade, Sadlowski Garza has served as the Southeast Side of Chicago’s 10th Ward’s representative. She was the first member of the CTU to be elected to the City Council and the first woman to hold the office of alderman for the 10th Ward.

Garza announced her retirement on Facebook, writing that it was now time for her to concentrate on her family and friends.

The City Council has seen a major reshuffle in recent weeks. Twelve additional members have either resigned already for one reason or another or they will not run for reelection in February.

Roderick Sawyer, Sophia King, and Ray Lopez had left their positions on the council after they declared their intent to focus their attention on joining what is becoming a fiercely contested race for mayor.
