Harry Maguire has been cautioned by Erik ten Hag that serving as the captain of Manchester United won’t be enough to get him back his spot.
In Saturday’s midday match at Southampton, Maguire is expected to be one of the substitutes after sitting out in United’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool last weekend.
Even though Maguire will continue to serve as captain, Ten Hag informed the 29-year-old defender he must work his way back onto the first-team squad.
It will be difficult for Maguire to regain his spot, but those close to him say the defender is committed to doing it because he wants what is best for United.
Interestingly, Bruno Fernandes wore the captain’s armband against Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Ten Hag playing Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in central defense on Saturday.
If Maguire stayed on the sidelines, Ten Hag was asked if he would think about reassigning the captaincy. He responded, (I’m not looking so far ahead). Erik added in due time his decision about the captaincy would be based on performance henceforth.
