The previous owner, affectionately known as ‘Mr Belfast’ by the squad and crowd, has been recalled as “a Giant of a man in every sense of the word. The Belfast Giants recounted in a statement how the Belfast native took leadership of the squad at a time when the club was on the brink of collapse.
Gillespie grew up in Belfast and established his life and profession in Houston, Texas. During his numerous travels home, he found the Belfast Giants and rapidly became a devoted fan and supporter of the team, impressed by the inclusive and inviting environment the Giants were establishing, as well as hockey’s capacity to bring once-divided communities together.
“When the then-Superleague folded in 2002/3, the Giants were on the verge of bankruptcy.” Gillespie stepped in to preserve the business, and his very generous altruistic act has left a long-lasting legacy.
