What happened to Shinzo Abe?

On Friday, August 8, 2022, the prime minister was assassinated by a raged gunman.

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister, died after being fired during an election campaign in western Japan’s Nara city, according to Japanese media institution NHK.

The Nara fire department had previously stated that Abe, 67, was in cardiac arrest before being brought to the hospital. He was claimed to have been injured on the right side of his neck and the left collarbone.

Abe is seen fainting on the street in a TV video, with many security officers hurrying toward him.

The 67-year-old global leader is then shown collapsing while grasping his chest through his blood-splattered shirt.

Tetsuya Yamagami, a Nara City resident, was detained on suspicion of attempted murder for firing at Abe.

He is said to be a former member of the marine self-defense force, and he seems to have shot at the former Prime Minister from behind with a handmade gun. The motive for the attack has yet to be determined.
