Johnny Carson’s cause of death: How did Johnny Carson die?

Carson, of Malibu, California, experienced a major heart attack on March 19, 1999. He was sent to a hospital in nearby Santa Monica where he underwent quadruple-bypass surgery.

At the beginning of his time on The Tonight Show, Carson frequently smoked in front of the camera. He had been a heavy smoker for many years. Each day, he consumed four packs of Pall Mall cigarettes.

He reportedly began saying, “These things are killing me,” as early as the middle of the 1970s. When they last spoke, Carson kept saying, “Those darn cigarettes,” his younger brother recalled.

Carson passed away from respiratory failure brought on by emphysema at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at 6:50 am PST on January 23, 2005. In September 2002, when he was 79 years old, he made the public aware of his fatal disease. His ashes were delivered to his wife, Alexis Maas when his corpse was cremated.
