Four people have been taken into custody because they may have been involved in the railway track theft in the Eastern area near Nsawam.
At approximately 8:20 p.m., Stephen Tetteh Blebo, the driver of a Hyundai Mighty truck bearing registration number GS-3201-09, and the three suspects—Ibrahimu, Abdul Kadril, and Japharu Haruna—were apprehended while transporting substantial quantities of stolen railroad tracks.
The Oparekrom crossroads police unit acted as soon as they had solid information regarding the theft.
The suspects and the car carrying the pilfered railway lines were apprehended and taken immediately to the station for additional examination.
While the inquiry is ongoing, the arrested individuals and the seized car are being held by the police at Nsawam.
The event highlights the persistent problem of railway infrastructure theft that the area faces.
In January of this year, irate residents of Akuapem South’s Pakro hamlet stopped a vehicle that was transporting stolen railroad tracks and dumped them in the center of the neighborhood.
Following a discussion between the community and Akuapem South MCE Frank Aidoo, who asked for their vigilance to help solve the issue of railway track theft, this action was taken.
Then, on January 14, 2024, Mr. Frank Aidoo sent a letter to the Ministry of Railway Development pleading for immediate action to stop the theft of train lines.
In order to look into and catch the offenders, he also alerted the Eastern Regional Police leadership, the Eastern Regional Minister, and the local police.
Regretfully, the railroad rails that were taken over vanished.
Some locals claimed that some members of the community conspired with the offenders.
Since then, the police and MCE Frank Aidoo have worked harder to put a stop to these illegal operations in the municipality and its environs.
